    Default Box Call - Needed

Need a new turkey box call. Any recommendations outside of big box store products?

try making one yourself. I started making scratch boxes a few months ago just to see if I could. Sound pretty dang good to me, Im not a turkey hunter though. And with very limited tools. Biggest problem was getting the right wood combination to sound right.

If you really want to get into it, check out old gobblers website.

Off the shelf, personally I’ve liked the sound of the David Halloran boxes but don’t own one myself. Rarely use one anymore. I have an Ernie Fetters long box that I like and wasn’t as expensive as many others but I don’t know if he does anything but long boxes.

You got time to wait or need one now/for Christmas? And as others mentioned OG is a great forum. Unicoi is an amazing show with the best of the best call makers.

    I second Bob Harwell.

Call him and then, go by and see him. It’ll be way more worth it than going to a show or buying online from a guy you’ve never met.

I’ve got a block of cherry my late grandpa gave me I’ve been meaning to take to him.

I use a lynchs fool proof box call and slate with rosewood striker. Honestly I think it is all anyone needs. I was listening to turkeys this morning both young and old birds. Ones voice was cracking (keekee) and the other sounded like she smoked cigs (raspy).

This being said I’ve made some calls with my kids staining and varnishing and it has been a lot of fun.
