    Default Cam back to Panthers

Cam Newton returning to Carolina Panthers
The former NFL MVP reunites with the team that he led to Super Bowl 50

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

The 2015 NFL MVP agreed to terms Thursday with the team that made him the first overall pick in 2011, an unlikely reunion after their divorce at the end of the 2019 season.

The deal is pending a physical.

Newton last played for the Panthers in Week 2 of 2019, before a Lisfranc injury ended his season, continuing a string of shoulder and foot injuries that plagued his final few seasons in Charlotte. He was released following the season as the Panthers began a new era under Matt Rhule.

Newton signed with the New England Patriots prior to the 2020 season, and started 15 games before losing the starting job to first round rookie Mac Jones this summer and being released by New England.

But his career has always been tied to the Carolinas. Newton won the NFL offensive rookie of the year award in 2011, and league MVP honors in 2015, when he led the team to a 15-1 record and a berth in the Super Bowl. He threw for 35 touchdowns and rushed for 10 more in that MVP year.

In nine seasons with Carolina, Newton passed for 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns, and rushed for 4,806 yards and 58 touchdowns. He's also the NFL's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 70.

The 32-year-old's signing comes in the wake of an injury to starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who is expected to miss four to six weeks with a shoulder injury. Newton, who has started 139 games in his ten-year NFL career, is expected to join P.J. Walker and Matt Barkley as active quarterbacks on the team's roster.

Had my heart set on D Watson ending up there but it appears he is “untouchable” until all this crap is settled
