    Default Midwest deer hunt questions

I’m wanting to take a deer hunting trip in the next couple of years….I’ve looked at numerous outfitter and guide websites and they all seem almost identical….I’d like to have a kind of do it myself hunt not just some guide stick me in a tree stand that has been there for 20 years. More like hey there is a pretty good buck hanging out in this block of woods here is your stand go hunt. Also not opposed to a public land hunt. However I have zero knowledge about where to even begin searching for that info.

Those of you that have done trips before what are your do’s and don’ts of this kind of hunt
When in doubt, shoot him again!

Work like it's all up to me, but pray, like it's all up to him!

Start buying preference points today for Iowa. Hunt Kentucky or Ohio public land until you can draw Iowa. Guides definitely increase the odds at a trophy buck.

Read everything you can by Bill Winke before he purchased property.

Midwest outfitters average 1/3 shot opportunities you can do better on your own.

If you want to book a hunt take a rifle a Canada or Texas.

Don't go to Indiana thieves will steal your stand.

Solid advice. I just got back from central Illinois and there were several sits that I wished I had my rifle instead of a bow.

Yep. Anything west of the Mississippi is a waste of time. Southern Maryland? Gold mine

If you want to bow hunt Iowa your 4-5 years out, gun 2 years. I split a 400 acre lease with one other guy. Zone 4 Southwest Iowa. He’s there now bowhunting I’m 3 years out. If you have friends and family you can get a leftover doe tag and party hunt 1st or second gun season. I’m heading out for 1st Gun in a couple of weeks. We’ve had a couple guys we knew and liked, buy a 3rd spot if they draw and it’s an off year for us. Just deer, no turkeys. There’s not a booner behind every tree, but I’ve never spent a week there during the rut and not had an opportunity at a 150” + deer.

It took 5 points in zone 4 this year to be guaranteed a tag. A few folks drew with 4. It depends on how many points the other applicants have.

Not experienced with anywhere other than Ohio, so there may be better opportunities. That said, if you can take two weeks and go to Ohio the first two weeks of November, and if you have the will power to sit in a stand from first light to dark, you will have a solid chance to kill a slob. You may sit there for two weeks and never see a big buck, but chances are you will. If weather is good and moonphase is right, there’s a good chance does come into estrous and you will see chasing galore and a pile of different bucks. When it’s good, I’ve seen it where you could hang a stand in a 1/2 acre between houses beside a busy highway and have just as good a chance at a bruiser as a guy sitting in the middle of 500 acres of private. When it’s on, does will drag bucks through every patch of woods in the region.
“I can’t wait ‘till I’m grown” is the stupidest @!#* I ever said!

We go to Illinois every year for slug gun season , difference in night and day between Midwest and SC deer hunting

Truly one of those things everyone needs to try at least once

Our situation is guys that lease the land bow hunt, so we lease the gun season. Small tract of family land and they treat us like family every year

Something to see when you see a huge buck in a wide open cut corn or bean field that could easily score 160+. All 3 of us have killed our life time largest out there (mid 140’s-mid 160’s).

We leaving Wednesday around 5am and get out there before dark

Thursday we set up ladder stands , have that down to an art. Hunt Fri-Sun or until you tag out. We do not worry about coming home without a deer but at least 1 of us has always tagged out and most years we all could but we can get a little selective at times , last year I passed on opening am on a big 8pt probably 22”+ wide with long tines. One G2 was broken off and I did not shoot, regretted not taking that deer but no big deal

There are sites where you can lease land from, look into that . If you are half decent hunter you can figure it out on your on , trust me

Only downside to Illinois is the short 3 day season but it works for our schedules. We could go back for the second 3 day gun season but just no time in my schedule for that

Like you I always wanted to go but all the guides looked the same and guess I was worried about getting taken or just “stuck in a stand” some where with no chance of a deer

Lot of folks I know hunt public land, you would be surprised how much public land is in other states

We always go for the fun trip and possibilities of taking a buck of a lifetime but never leave disappointed whether we tag out or not

I think Sprig said it the best on here about 8 years ago. “It is just time and money, pack the truck and go”

SC is long gone. It hasn’t turned blue yet but it won’t be long.
