    Default Squirrels over bait

Out of curiosity are you allowed to shoot squirrels over bait?

My 5 year old is a little young to shoot a rifle but can shoot a .410 and pellet gun. He killed his first Turkey last spring and as everyone knows when you are behind the gun hunts are more exciting for a kid. Figured late morning when deer hunting he could let the local squirrel population have it with either of the above mentioned guns. More so out of curiosity wondering on what the law is..

Also does anyone know a good processor for squirrels in the low country. Looking for one that will skin, gut and make speciality products.

Legal - Yes. Ethical - Absolutely not. And if you don't teach your son how to clean squirrels you might as well hand him the heroin now.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-

Teach him the right way, with a dog.

I’ll be glad to offer my services once deer season is over. Can he shoot the .410 pretty good?
I’ll put the laser on the squirrel and tell the boy to shoot the green dot.

Step up to a #22 grinder and you can throw the whole squirrel in there.

My second question about the processor is a joke lol

First question is serious. More so just wanted to know as some of the areas we hunt have feeders. SC laws are somewhat ambiguous as deer anything goes but turkeys there isn’t necessary a clearly defined distance or anything of that nature.

And to the above question no he doesn’t shoot it that well. He needs a rest as the gun is pretty heavy for him. He is stoked on the idea of eating the things he hunts. (Always asking to eat the Turkey he shot and the gator he and I got a few weeks back).

Kind of like when you see a bear on your lease, right?

Remember shooting a squirrel with a pellet gun is the easiest thing to do. So when he misses or bloodys one up, remind him how bad he sucks..

In all seriousness, pretty sure the DNR looks the other way when it comes to squirrels.

I figured they would especially for a kid starting out. More so just wondering since I can’t seem to find anything on it.

Having a squirrel hunt on January 2 was a yearly ritual at a bow club I was in. It was fun getting even with the little bastards that tormented us all year eating all the corn around the feeders.

There is no law against it so it's legal. It's as ethical as sitting under an oak tree full of acorns or in a pecan orchard.

To a squirrel dog man, it's a waste of a chance for a dog to tree, just like shooting a wild flushed quail seem unethical to a bird dog man.
