Wonder if it was a climber or ladder stand.

I used a climber one morning when it was raining and the wind chill was about 25. Strong wind blowing down into the field I was hunting. And it was the 3rd time I had ever used a climber.

Walked in about a half mile down an old logging road to the spot and realized in my haste I forgot to put my harness on. I didn’t want to walk all the way back in the rain. About halfway up the teeth on that climber didn’t want to dig into that wet pine. It was slick and I guess it was a little more dense due to the cold. The lower half slipped and I damn near shit my pants. Luckily the upper held me.

I won’t take that chance again. I’d have been there for at least 8 hours before anyone would have missed me.

My cousin had a cable on his lock on break the other day. Thank God he was able to regain his footing and not fall. I asked if he had on a hardness and he said "no".

I was reading something a few weeks ago that showed that the vast majority of tree stand injuries come from stepping into and out of lock-ons.

I've started putting ropes on my ladder stands and wearing a harness. 'Got dad wearing them too. He's had two knees, one shoulder and one hip replaced and he's complaining about the remaining OEM hip so he hasn't used the climber yet this year.

This is a man that will pour out Windex, replace it with tap water and use that to clean his windows because "water works just as good..." so I consider getting him to use the harness is a major victory...

Per most if not all labels, lock ons are not intended to be left hanging year round. Cables weaken over time if left in the elements.

You have to be a 3 toed idiot to not wear a safety harness and be hooked in before your feet ever leave the ground.

I still have a Seat of the Pants harness free to whoever needs one.

How do you hook in for the first time while installing the life line?

Yeah, say what you want about hunting out of a harness but I am attached to a tree at all times when I use mine. I also have a harness for my climber or when I use to use to a lock on.

What harness do you use? The SOP is the best I've tried so far.

You just put the tree strap on once you get into the climber then move it up the tree as you climb.

Yeah works just like any other stand. I just attach it to the tree on the way up instead of waiting. Keep it a little lose so I can move it easy. Takes just a little longer but worth it. Tripod? I only have one tripod and its not vary high off the ground at all. I have it staked down and attached to a tree.

When I was using lock ons and climbers I used a SOP.

Now I just use/wear my saddle for all of 'em.
