I came up to Camden Saturday after work to get some things for my North Dakota trip. Slipped in the woods Sunday morning for the first time this year and it was really nice. Cool northern wind got me excited even though I didn't see anything in the cut over. Got done early and slipped over to my trail camera. As luck would have it I had no dear or device to check the pictures so I did what any sane person would do... I went to Walgreens and put my SD card in the photo viewer. There were two specific deer that I was looking for, a wide eight point and a ten that I had had on camera for a few years. As luck would have it they were both still hanging around but had no daytime pictures of them after putting the camera up 2 or 3 weeks ago.
I got to the stand about 4:45 got settled in. I had planned on sitting on the ground but then decided otherwise and just said screw it and jumped in the tripod. I don't get to hunt like I used to so I decided to get aggressive. At 5:30 i let out a few light grunts. Other than a breeze it was real quiet out there. Then at 6:10 I let out a few more aggressive grunts and then banged the horns together.
At 6:25 a deer steps out in the lane behind a Holly that had blown down showing me only his hind end. I knew it wasn't a doe so I got the gun up. When he took a step to show me his rack I knew instantly who he was by mass alone. He was coming through some thin pines quartering slightly away. I found a spot to stop him and of course he stops long and all i can see is his hips again. I thought for sure it was over. He keeps on walking and I stop him again this time he stops short of where I need him. Stomach is upside down. I scanned forward and found the last place I had left to get a shot before he was either directly down wind or just plain out of sight. Went back to him and waited for him to move. I didn't know a minute could last and hour. He finally walks into my only window left and he was DRT. I almost threw up. Heavy 10point, 193 lbs.
