Default Hours on an outboard motor.

How many hours on an 4 stroke outboard (115-150 hp range) is a lot, considering it has been properly maintained? Is there a difference in saltwater vs. freshwater hours? What is considered the hour life of a 115-150 hp 4 stroke outboard?

I’d say beyond 800-1000 hours. If you flush it out and take care of it in saltwater to the max you can you should be fine.

I have 1500 on my F250's, all saltwater use. They look brand new under the cowlings. Just had the mid-sections inspected because I thought I may have had dry exhaust corrosion, they were perfect. There's crabbers running around here with 4, 5, 6,000+ on these engines.

I'm up to 2000 hours on a Honda 135 hp. I'd like to double that.

I am a little over 500 hours on my 10mo old Suzuki 140. Follow the maintenance schedule religiously and not an issue.

I am a fan of a frequently used well maintained motor way more than low hours, and infrequent maintenance.

You want them to have 100-200 a year (obv with regular maintenance)

Outboards need to be used and the reason for them going is typically caused by corrosion (saltwater)

It's wore out, you should sell it now.

I’d venture to say that a higher percentage nowadays go for a combination of low use, low maintenance, while using ethanol fuel than saltwater. But saltwater would be a fairly close second to ethanol.

I crabbed, picked oysters, and harvested horseshoe crabs for 4years. The fella I worked for never flushed engine, barely did maintenance, and ran engine hard almost every day. He runs them until they go out of warranty then replaces. He runs Yamaha 150.

My best buddies are guides up in NC , offshore and inshore
its nothing for them to have 5000 hrs on a Yamaha
they are religious on their service
not using a motor year round is the worst thing for one, in my opinion

Seems like with saltwater use the big thing is post-use maintenance. Proper flushing, rinsing, etc will keep a motor going for many years and hours of run time. Avoiding those actions after removing the craft from the water will certainly induce problems sooner rather than later, compared to fresh. Salt acts as a catalyst for corrosion where you have dissimilar metals contracting each other, such as a steel bolt holding together aluminum parts on boat motors and even hulls. We deal with it on the aircraft all the time. Preventative and post-use maintenance is absolutely critical to staving off issues down the road. While virtually impossible to avoid them completely, the goal is to prolong said issues for as long as humanly possible.

50-100 hours per year is probably average for your weekend warrior inshore on on a lake. Offshore will be significantly more.
