Well the Maine trip is a success and it’s not even over. My Dad can’t get around that great anymore so I got lucky when my bear guild called me with this opportunity. We arrived Saturday afternoon and rode around checking some spots. I couldn’t resist shooting a few grouse on the way.
We rode around some more Sunday and made our plan. We would hit the spot closest to the lodge because we figured no one would be there and we could be there quick. 3:30 came early morning and after some home fries, bacon and eggs we hit the road. We sat in the truck until right before shooting light.
After a short 1/3 mile hike we set up in the road on the edge of a cut over. It was a fairly easy walk for my dad but he was winded. After we got his tripod set up and he caught his breath the guide made a few cow calls and grunts. Instantly we had one answer and he started thrashing the maples. He walked out into the cut and we got busy!!
There he stood broadside approx 175yards. Dad shot first and as soon as he shot I backed him up. The bull spun and started towards the hard woods and I sent 3 more as he was running. After my 4th shot he disappeared out of view. We let everything settle down and the guide went back and got the truck, then we made our way across the cut.
When we got to where the bull went out of site there he was. We ended up with a couple lung shots on the first 2 shots and at least one made contact on the Hail Mary’s because that’s where he face planted.
The Lord granted me at least one more great hunt with my dad and a great bull to boot!! Now to kick back, kill some more grouse and wet a hook.
