You make a very valid point there.

Short term that plan may have worked but how did he expect to not get caught stealing the settlement money? He was a fixture in the community, not a Nigeran prince with a gmail account.

Murdaugh and Fleming did not take any steps to set up a structured settlement for Satterfield’s sons, Bland said. First of all, you have to get the court’s approval, which they didn’t.

“When you do a structure, you get tons of documents in advance of the settlement, because you have to see what the annuity returns going to look like over 10 or 15 year period,” Bland said. “And the beneficiaries have to sign off that they’re going to get their money over time instead of once. None of that was done.”

So after the check was made to “Forge,” what happened next?

“Alex Murdaugh opened up a bank account at Bank of America under the name of Forge, got the check cashed and walked away with the money,” Bland said.

I don't understand why the Satterfield family didn't have an attorney to take care of these legal details... or was he in on it, too?

Fleming was the original attorney, Alex's best friend and Paul's Godfather per reports. He was also the attorney for Connor Cook. Alex recommend him to represent both the heirs and Cook per reports and affidavits.

Still this one seems more odd. They got two separate insurance companies to pay $500k and $3.5 million? Two attorneys, a judge and a banker to risk their careers? It just does not seem to add up unless it was an on going scheme yet still hard to believe.

I still remember Michael Avenatti sailing in for a kill. But there was Operation Jackpot in the same District.

Dang... it sounds like the family needs to hire a new attorney to wipe this Fleming dude out financially, and get his law license in the meantime.

Seems like the firm might be on the hook for some damages? Not just Alex and his buddy?

you would think a firm this big would have some kind of insurance against mal-practice and lawyer thievery.
CC, does such type coverage exist? Like liability, umbrella thingy for firms? Or would they have enough financial clout to be "self insured"?
