Sportin’s Protege
Last winter, I was on an OOS trip, grabbing a burger and beer at my favorite pub on the marsh.
Being dressed in camo, I drew the attention of an old scruffy fella at the end of the bar.
He inquired as to where I was from, and how the hunting had been so far.
Very kind man. He had hunted this area all his life and had guided in years past.
At some point decoys came up and he mentioned he had a buddy that had a shed full of old Herters he didn’t use as he had retired from guiding and wasn’t in a condition to hunt anymore.
I contacted his friend and he was kind enough to drive 2 hours to bring me 28 model 81s and a dozen 92s he had hunted over for 40 years.
Most were in need of some work, but the price was great, and I loved the fact that they had so much history in an area I have grown to love.
Sportin had done some 72s and 63s for me a while back, and I got interested in refurbing these myself.
I’ve got a lot to learn, but have enjoyed the process. Maybe one day I’ll get to his level, but for now, I believe I can fool a few with what I’ve got.

Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
