Ya know, come to think of it, the worst I’ve seen on a public dove field was from a GW…..dude asked my for my gun to check for a plug…..I was shooting a double barrel.
I was actually impressed by a game wardens firearm knowledge on a field once. Dad and I were hunting a public field years ago and sitting together when two GW’s ( one older and one younger) came around checking the field. They asked for license and the older one wanted to check my 870 for a plug. As I was handing it to him the younger game warden asked dad to see his gun, an old Winchester 1400 Mk ii. The older game warden glanced over at it and said “there’s no need, that guns factory designed to only hold 3 shells”

In that period we shot fresh cut-overs with poke-berries. They were all around no need to hunt a crowded field but the public fields were not crowded and farmers had $20 per Hunter. Then leasing became more common and more people moved to a public fields. I still have open invite to a club but not ready to commit 6 Saturday. Deer on the other side of Mississippi is more intriguing.

Not dove hunting > hunting a public field

SCDNR- worst dove field baiters in the history of baiting dove fields.

DNR does an excellent job with dove fields in the Pee Dee.

The problem with dove hunting is the number of private sunflower fields around here.

Hunted Samworth a couple of years ago just to see what it was like. As nice of a field as I have ever hunted and it held a bunch of birds. Local kids have it scouted and will sprint to best spots. Just wait. They will be out of shells quickly if the birds are flying. Scratched out a few hunting the fringes. Everyone was pleasant and I didn’t witness anything dangerous.

Franklin Gravely’s grandson ran the best public dove hunts for DNR that I’ve ever been a part of.

In my experience the DNR does very good jobs with the dove fields. At least the ones I go look at. There is one in particular that I don't believe gets planted to its full capability most of the years but overall they do good jobs.

I’ve always been pretty pleased with the planting side of things. It’s the crowds I’ve come to hate

Maybe have some fields that are a free-for-all and also have some DNR pay/draw fields that have limited spacing. That might would be the best of both worlds. If someone wants to pay for a chance at a better shoot they have the opportunity to do so, those that don’t still have a place to shoot

The pay hunt fields would be scorned as "elitist, rich, privileged folks" fields in these days of woke socialism, much like the planted and managed upland private corn ponds draw the ire of the people looking for a free ride. They would immediately start letting in "exception" hunters who wouldn't have to pay, starting with youth, then elderly, then "underprivleged", minority, immigrant status, and on and on.

Draw hunts are definitely a good idea.

One thing that would have to be addressed is the no-shows. Folks that got drawn and didn't show up could screw up the hunt for everyone. A dove field can only hold a finite number of hunters before the quality and safety of the hunt starts to suffer but there also needs to be a minimum number of hunters to keep the birds flying. That could probably be addressed by letting people who didn't get drawn be on stand-by. They could get to hunt only in place of a no-show or after anyone shot their limit and came out of the field.

They do a good job because in most cases, they don't have anything else to do but mow grass and keep the dove field up. Not to take away form the work, but it ain't hard to have a nice field when you got all day with nothing else pressing you.

There’s a field in Abbeville where they used to do a draw youth hunt. This was 15yrs ago.
Adult would sign up the kids and they would draw names. If your name got drawn you had to rsvp by a certain date. If you didn’t RSVP, your name is as removed and they drew another name.

Dad used to put my name in every year. They served lunch beforehand, adults could shoot with their kids and we had some great shoots over there. Killed a banded dove and shot my first limit on that field. Then eventually, things went downhill. One old man in particular would sign up about a dozen different kids, inevitably one or two of them would get drawn but they were usually kids about 5 or 6 that could barely handle a gun. He was just putting names in the pot so he would get a chance to shoot. Then they changed it to where only e kids could shoot and I think the number of people putting in declined severely when they did that so they eventually just made it a youth shoot only but it was open to whoever wanted to come and I haven’t heard anything good about it since .

The fields at manchester werent bad years ago, just way over crowded, then they went to teh draw hunt system and the shoots were great. Not over crowded, you didnt have to race in to beat everyone to a spot, really good shoots but the complainers got thier way and the draw hunts went away. Now i9t seems its just a bunch of low bird shooting or sky busting rednecks there looking for a fight. Fields are limited to 50 rounds but they have thier kids making trips back to the truck constantly for more shells, drinking beer in the parking lot, hell I've seen it all on a public dove field. Pretty much gave it up but may be looking for a club next year, I miss shooting birds, especially fat yankee birds in cold weather

The wife and I went and checked the public field we normally hunt and it looks like the sunflowers did well.

I had this exact thing happen as well...we were shooting an invite hunt @ Carolina Fresh Farms(maybe?) up around Norway many years back. DNR rolled up on our field and began to check for licenses and plugs. I hand him my license, he hands it back, and rather indignantly says "Since you didn't offer to show me your plug, I assume you don't have one?" I did the puppy dog head turn and looked at him funny....mind you the action is open, and has been sitting, balancing on my shoulder for the last 10-15 mins while we are doing the whole dog and pony show with him 3-4 feet from me. Told him I didn't have a plug but I had two triggers, if that would work instead....

I usually ride by that field 2-3 times a week in my work travels. Haven’t stopped this year but it’s looked pretty poor the past few
