    Default Public Dove Fields

How many on here shoot them regularly? I used to shoot them if our field didn’t have birds or didn’t have an invite somewhere else that day. I’m in a dove club now that i waited to get in on for a few years and it’s been very enjoyable. But I was thinking about public fields today and got to wondering. What can be do done to improve the experience? Or should they be left as the free-for-all that they currently are. Would you be willing to pay for a chance at a draw-type hunt at a good DNR field? Ideas to fairly limit the number of people on a public field?

I have always said they should come up with a safe number for the field. Label the spots like 1-200 or whatever. When you sign in before you go in the field it is labeled 1-200. What ever number you sign by is your spot. That way family or friends can stay together if they want. People that get there late wait until someone comes out and then goes to that empty spot.

You dont have to sign in order that way early people can get the spots they want

    Default Public Dove Fields

It’s been probably 10 years or more since I’ve been to one. I’d rather sit at home than shoot another public field with the way it was the last time. I’d be more inclined to give it a go on “rest weekends” if they went to a draw system.

How early can you get there to sign in,

I’m betting folks would throw do n in the parking lot over the last spot

I’d rather go squirrel hunting with a red ryder than hunt a public dove field

There are a bunch of public fields by my house. South mountain game lands has 5 dove fields total and once now season starts they are empty. John’s River game land has a permit only system until late season and is always a good hunt and well maintained. I like the draw aspect but hate when I get drawn opening day as I always hunt my club for the opener.

I went to one once. Never ever again unless they do assigned spots and limited number

After “shooting” the New Cut Rd field in Spartanburg County (now a county park) back in 2007 once or twice, I lost my interest in ever hunting a public field again.

    Never hunted one.

The years I didn’t have a field, dove club or an invite I just worked on deer hunting stuff instead

No interest in hunting a public dove field. I know this from experience , Rubberheads are found on Private fields too.

Seen more reckless, dangerous behavior on private fields than I thought possible. Saw one fella shot twice. On the same day, by the same shooter. Drew blood both times if you can believe it.

Public fields is all I have to hunt. At this stage of my life, I can’t justify the cost of a private club. I’ve been on some good public hunts over the years. 18 years to be exact, and I’m just glad I have somewhere to take my kids.

ETA: I do get invited every once in a while on private property, and that’s nice too.

First Saturday is a problem on a lot of fields. Not really sure what the solution is because I don't think they are going to limit these fields to X amount of people. I just don't go to them for that first hunt anymore.
