    Default Masticatory Muscle Myositis

Had to take my GSP to the vet late last night for not eating or drinking all day. Could not open his mouth and he would holler if he tried to it was forced to. Masticatory Muscle Myositis (MMM) is what the vet diagnosed it as so he gave me some pain meds and steroids to get me through the weekend till I could see my normal vet. Even though I’m getting a second opinion has anyone had this issue before? Did it go away easily or stick around?

Sorry about your pup, I've never heard of it. Interested to hear responses.

    Did the meds help?

Its an immune mediated disease. Have seen it a few times. Pred will likely be the best treatment for it. May want to switch to soft food or wet down kibble for a bit. Should resolve in a month or so, can sometimes relapse.

Local vet thinks it’s a abscess deep behind a tooth but before knocking him out Again to dig around gonna keep on the current meds to see if it solves the problem. He is not a chewer…does not play with toys only wants to point. Time will tell

Squeeze his jaws. If he bites the shit out of you then you’re on to something. Once you’ve established its in the jaw(s) you can start squeezing at the base of each individual tooth. When he bites the shit out of you again you’ll know which tooth it is that’s bothering him and you can take him to the Doggie Dentist and Chiropractic Emporium and get him fixed up quick like.

There is an ELISA blood test for 2M autoantibodies in masticatory muscle myositis. Might want to look into getting that done before scheduling an oral/dental procedure.

IME, catching it early gets a much better response to treatment. If it's MMM, it's something you want to get on early. Delays in starting treatment can result in permanent muscle fibrosis that will not respond to treatment.

Sorry to hear about your pup, HEAD. Good luck to you both.
