    Default Hens and their decoys

I hate painting hen decoys. Mine always look like 3rd grade art projects. But, ocassionally the do what they're supposed to do. I like when that happens.

I love pictures of dead ducks. Decoys look good! I tried to paint mine own once, my six year old could do a better job than me.

Not a hen and her decoy but a dog and some dead ducks.... Missing ducks season for sure!

“Duck hunting gives a man a chance to see the loneliest places …blinds washed by a rolling surf, blue and gold autumn marshes, …a rice field in the rain, flooded pin-oak forests or any remote river delta. In duck hunting the scene is as important as the shooting.” ~ Erwin Bauer, The Duck Hunter’s Bible, 1965

Good stuff! I don't shoot hens swimming on the water.

I wait until they stop swimming. Carry on.

Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right but because they have more experiences of being wrong.

    Your eider looks great
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

Yep - thanks for asking. I sold the kind'a tan 1436 with the middle seat to a guy that fishes in the upper Santee Swamp and had War Eagle make me a 1436 with an open middle and a front deck. The first bird I killed out of the new boat was an 8-toed greenhead.

Thanks - I remember being almost embarrassed about painting eider decoys in the middle of SC...I considered the probability of that decoy ever seeing an eider as being near zero. As much as I like to scheme, plan, paint and wire in preparation for killing the next new species, there's an obvious component of divine intervention that I just can't ignore.

The latest installment in the Hens and Their Decoys series... I didn't want to shoot a hen merganser just for a photo so I went with a different set-up. It's a poor photo because it was dark and foggy.
