    Default Cultivate?

Sunflowers are knee high looking great but recently had a new flush of pigweed and sickle pod despite 2 separate post sprays of lightning. My guess is the pre program ( prowl and Spartan) residual is fading out and we have had 4-5 “ of rain in the past week. I have a buddy that has a 4 row cultivator but I’d like some input before I go this route. Thanks!

I’ve run the cultivators through sunflowers a few times in the past, usually to incorporate Cadre if I didn’t get any rain within a few days of spraying but occasionally for the same reason you are. Worked well but I did notice some leaf damage that was similar to what you’d see on sunflowers that were overlapped during spraying. I’m guessing that throwing dirt from the alleys onto the base of the plants piled up the herbicide close to them. I started picking up the sweeps and setting the rollers a little less aggressive and never had any more problems.

The pigweed will just grow back, just a tad pissed off, with more seeds in the ground.

I just sprayed cadre today on both our fields. One field has pig weeds and the other doesn’t. I’m going to cultivate at some point I would think cultivating would be ok unless the pig weeds have gone to seed then you are doing more harm than good but at that point you can’t get a cultivator in the field anyways. The only good answer I’ve found to pigweed is crop rotation. I sprayed Zidua at planting and it didn’t get rained on until 2 weeks ago so I’m certain it didn’t do any good. Between the cultivator and a hooded sprayer I can manage the weeds in between the rows but the weeds in row are a problem.
