Dang that is crazy. I thought it was interesting the article said that buck swam the river 7 times.

After hunting on the Wabash River between Indiana and Illinois, I witnessed first hand how many shits a deer gives about crossing a river. NONE

I photographed this myself while out duck hunting one morning...wasn't quite a mile wide but he would have followed her anywhere...

Cool pic. I have seen deer, bears, and hogs making the mile+ swim at Fontana lake since I was a kid. They do what they do without much discernible reason, but I bet we can discern what that particular buck is reasoning...

Dave, the guy who posted it didn't link back to it and only said this...

We captured buck 140 during December 2020 as a 2-year-old. His behavior was normal... until the rut ended in late January and the water began to rise.

Yes, that’s the 1-mile wide Mississippi River, and he crossed it during peak flood stage before he set up shop in Louisiana, 18 MILES from his capture location.

Deer living in areas prone to severe environmental events like flooding go to incredible lengths to survive. He seems quite content in Louisiana for now, but watch for updates because we have a hunch he might swim back to the Mississippi for the fall.
Duckman has some pretty wild tales of the ones they did in the Congaree swamp. Some would live damn near under the porch of the clubhouse for years without ever being seen on the hoof, and others went up and down the swamp like they were selling girl scout cookies...
