Sap just as bad as the roots. Just leave a buffer strip.

Exactly. I can make it real simple. Those areas aren't going to grow well. Don't sweat it and leave it alone.

    Cheap and effective.

The field is trying to tell you that there needs to be a road around it.

I'm having the same issue with the fence around my garden. It's solar that runs off of a 6v battery. I have 3 ground rods with 30ft of ground. All connections are good. It will shock the dogs whenever they touch it with their noses, but they will rub against it and nothing.

I was thinking that may be an issue since we haven't had a drop of rain in what seems to be months. Since we did get 2'' a few days ago, I may need to let the dogs do a quick test for me. LoL

I went out and ran water around my ground rod today and drove it into the ground another 6 inches or so, and proceeded to the fence to get the hell knocked out of me lol. It worked

Back to the original question about field edges, I used a subsoiler that is like a single knife blade, not a chisel plow. I chisel plow will disturb the ground much more than a subsoiler and it takes a lot more HP to pull it. The subsoiler cuts the roots and doesn't try to bring them to the surface. It cuts deeper and only leaves a small groove visible. I was cutting 24" deep. Side note: if you do this in a powerline right of way, don't trust the 811 buried cable guys when they assure you that you won't hit any cables.

Nothing disruptive, just ground wires...big fat copper ground wires. The wood poles had been replaced by giant metal towers so it may have been left over stuff.

Well, shit. That was anticlimactic, fortunately for you.
