    Default Chattooga on the fly

Last minute, long overdue, quick packing trip to Chattooga. Going to blow the dust off my fly rod. I have very little experience with fly fishing, and that was for 5 minutes 5 years ago. Anyone have any recommendations on what they might be biting on this time of year?

Woodiewacker is the one to axe since Dookie is off chasing stripers or strippers or something...

Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

We used to throw a lot of wooly buggers on the Chattooga back in the day. Of course, that was back in the day and I have no current, relevant information there. Hopefully someone else has some more current knowledge (pun intended).

I always used a telico or an olive colored Woolley booger. It’s been years though.

I would try small black caddis, blue wing olives, wooly buggers, and some San Juan’s in natural colors. Terrestrial patterns will also work well right now. My go to right now is a larger yellow stone on top with a zebra midge dropper.

As the morning starts to warm you will see some hatch’s taking place pay close attention to the size and color and mimic that as best you can. You will increase your catch rate by tying a dropper on as well. The most important thing is just enjoy the moment it’s like golf kinda, once you get out of your own head you will see the river different. Find a place that hasn’t been bothered yet and spend 10-15 mins watching the water, watch what the fish are doing and use that to your advantage. If all else fails throw a pink trout magnet. Good luck it’s a great time to be out there and the fish up my way haven’t been very shy the last few weeks.

I'd start with Woodiewacker's suggestions, and then also try to call or stop by the Chattooga River Fly Shop in Mountain Rest. I found them friendly and helpful the one time I talked to them last Summer. Their number is 864.638.2806.

me too. Its the only thing I do well related to fly-fishing . no good at picking flies, or presenting them naturally, but I can cast like a champ thanks to that lesson.

Be sure to bring a ultralight and a black rooster tail for when you decide you want to catch something. Just kidding of course, but it will be packed with corn flingers this weekend and next.
