Horsepower is how fast you can hit the dock...
Torque is how far you can drag the dock after hitting it...
Ha ha, yep. Good description. A buddy was telling me last night how his son just ran his new glitter boat into a dock yesterday hauling ass chasing those high speed bass. Several years ago I witnessed a 58 Garlington crank in gear and a about haul off D dock at Edisto.
Does a motor known for torque last longer than a motor that has high RPM and horsepower?

Got to have torque to move the big boats and turn the big props though.
My son asked me the other day if I'd put 350's on the Southport. I told him that $15-20K more for another 200hp wasn't worth it when the top end wouldn't be more than 4-5mph difference over the 250's. Fuel economy would pick up a little but you'd have to run a lot of hours to make up the delta in cost and efficiency. Plus, I can't remember the last time I ran my boat WOT in the ocean. I'd rather set it on a good cruise and enjoy the ride. People get too hung up on top end for a deep V CC, you rarely use it. Speed is for you glitter boat guys.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

When we switched to the 4.2 300s from the 3.3 250s on our Contender, it behaved like a totally different boat. Taking 240lbs off the transom helped a lot.
With the big new outboards, the lower unit is your weak link.
A big CC is a versatile boat. Sporties with diesels troll like nothing else.
Torque is more the conversion of that horsepower. Mass is also a big part of it.
A cruise ship has about 50,000hp in its engines so it should hit that dock close to Mach 1.
Hp is actually calculated from torque. How fast it is doing “torque”

Also told it does not matter if it is fully loaded down. It still does 60. That is torque.

Most engines produce their torque at far lower RPMs than they create their HP. The lower RPMs over the life of the engine increase longevity. Unless you can change your gear ratios like in vehicles or a variable pitch prop like at airplane (some boats have this also) then your ideal speed, load, mission, it fixed to some extent. Big sportfishers have "trolling valves" which effectively change the gearing so they can troll at lower speeds but still have the capability of high speeds. These new SF have 50kts as a target. The HP/Torque/Speed wars are in full effect. This will get very interesting over the next ten years. MG
