All this talk about straight razors has reignited my desire to learn to use a straight razor. Anyone ever ventured in that direction. Is it worth it over a safety razor. I can’t get more than 3-4 shaves out of a drugstore razor Gillette you name it. My face must be the most sensitive skin on the planet.

My advice is to try the safety razor first. The learning curve is much steeper with a "cutthroat" razor.

Safety razors ain’t expensive or fancy. A razor cost $20 or less. Less than a gillette refill. Or you can spend a lot. You can get blades for as little as a nickel and shave all week with it.

America got hoodwinked in the 90’s. The multiblade cartridge razor is a solution looking for a problem.

My complexion is a lot better without the ingrown hairs from using a 6-bladed POS.

For my son I accepted a generous offer to have his brush, razor and stand made with custom wood handles and post by a member on here. He ordered the kits and is turning the wood for them as we speak.

For myself I went with the Rockwell stainless 6s. A bit pricey but I figure it's the Smithy of safety razors. Came with 100 free blades. The model I chose has 3 bases with 6 different settings so you can choose how aggressive you want it.

I can see these getting pretty addicting if you're a collector of such items. One is all you need but man there are a lot of options out there from new space age to old school vintage.

I doubt I'll ever shave my beard completely off but I do keep it trimmed, shaped and my neck shaved.

If I shaved my beard I'd look like a bald 16 year old with crows feet.

Safety razor with good blades. I use feather blades. Get a brush and good soap also

Probably ought to ease him into Feather blades. They are really good, but really sharp. New safety razor shavers are likely to mire down too hard if they are use to multi-bladed razors. Do that with Feathers and you'll look like you lost a knife fight with a ninja.

Gillette 7 O'Clock (any color)
Gillette Silver Blue
Personna Lab Blue
Crystal


Sharper:
Feather (thought they seem to dull quickly)
Bic Chrome platinum



The only bad ones I've had have been the Walmart Wilkinsons. I could not use them for nothing. Apparently there are at least two varieties of Wilkinson, one better than the other, but not sold at Walmart.

Don't forget a blade bank to store old razors in unless you have an old house with a medicine cabinet with a blade slot in it.

Many years ago one of the razor companies had a model that the handle vibrated. Well coming back through customs on our honeymoon from Jamaica, the inspector hit the end of my travel bag just right and that razor just went to buzzing and vibrating. The look on her face when she made eye contact with me and my wife was priceless. She just giggled and and waived us through.
