    Default CMC PT-35 issue

First of all, let me say this unit is 15 years old. So I get that it might need some maintenance. This is not a bitch session.

I was installing a new chartplotter in my boat today and happened to notice this issue with my T/T. Anybody had or seen a similar issue? If so, how was it fixed?

I’ve emailed the folks at CMC to see if I can buy the bracket that the motor is attached to. If not, I will be looking to get that corner cut out and re-welded/re-drilled. It’s 1/4” thick 6061.

I have always used a transom saver but all I can figure is this has been happening when under tow. When under power, that plate should be pushed toward the transom, not pulled away.

Hard to see in the picture, but the plate the motor is hanging from is wallered out. Motor is a 2005 long shaft 25hp Mercury.

I don't need my name in the marquee lights....

Looks like you tried to spot weld the mount to your transom and then paint over it.

Also looks like you applied the sticker over the camo paint....

Honey...I'll do it after the season is over.

Cant really see how much metal is left around due to the washer, but assuming there is enough. Drill both holes out so they are circular (not oblong/wallered out) and use a larger diameter bolt so there is no play in it.

The longer you run it as is the worse it will likely get until it wears through.

Why not just weld the holes shut and then drill them back out?

Hey Bolt. What chartplotter? You should have seen that before now.

I put a Garmin UHD 63CV in it.

And I ran the boat Friday a good bit with no issues. Never occurred to me to check that. Just happened to see it when I was messing around the back of the boat installing the fish finder.

I have guys at work that weld aluminum every day. Gonna show these pics to them and see what they say. I will do whatever is the strongest. If that connection fails, I lose my motor.

If you got guys with materials and skills, why not add a layer of aluminum where the bolt hole is.... on both the inside of the portion of the unit attached to the transom, then also add a layer on the outside of the portion the motor is attached to, then redrill the hole and replace with a longer bolt?

    Follow me?

It'd be like the aforementioned advice to weld the hole shut and redrill, but with an extra layer for more strength.

Like the Garmin. Those mounts are the deal. You gonna take it on and off each time you use? My mounts like that will give a little with a big bump so I don’t trailer with fishfinder in the boat.

Looks like the bolt got loose and start wallowing it out. I had my bolt come completely out a mile down the road last year.

    Can't hide that money!

Anyhow, I was leaning on welding the plate but thought better of it seeing that it's 6061, which is hardened. Talked to the customer service rep at CMC and he couldn't have been more helpful. New parts on the way.
And he said absolutely don't weld on any of their products as it will weaken the part.

They fixed me up with new plates free of charge once. My bolt hole was cracked.

Yeah. I’ll be taking it on/off. That whole interface is the trick.

As for the bracket, it was that close to being a catastrophe. Note to self: just when you think you check your junk enough, check it again....
