    Default First Marathon

Was signed up for Myrtle Beach (3/6), but it got postponed until May. Knew that would likely be a warm/humid suck-fest so I quickly signed up for Skidaway Island marathon in GA (3/13). Today ended up also being warmer than I'd like, 55-75 (start-finish). Goal was anything sub 3. Was a little apprehensive with the warmer weather and the fact that I have no experience at this distance. Tried to hold around 6:45 pace and ended up right around 6:49. Fastest mile was 6:40, slowest was 6:58. Consumed around 300 calories of tailwind/powerade and maybe 20oz of water. Last couple miles SUCKED, but at that point I knew the end was near. Finished 2:58:49.

That’s an incredible pace. Good job.

    Going for an ultra next?

Impressive - I can't run one mile in less than 8 minutes.

    Congrats.

On the subject of marathons... Where I use to live in TN was right down the road from where they had the Barkley Marathon. I actually bought John Kelly's parents home. He use to train running the hill in the back. If you've never heard of the Barkley, you should look it up.

    Good job, congrats.

I’m happy when I run a 10k and can keep my pace under 9:30.

Thanks. I've actually ran 50k during a 6 hour event last year. I also ran 34 during an 8 hour event during my marathon training this winter. I just took it easy on the 8 hour so I wouldn't get injured. Wasn't part of my training plan but a friend talked me into going since it was a cheap and local event.

Yeah, I run sometimes with a friend who is all about ultras. He got a triple crown for running like 3 200 milers in the national forest. He's always talking about trying to just qualify for Barkely even though it's like impossible.

Do you have a background in running in school and such?

With those times, you could be pretty competitive in the ultra world.

No background in sports, just have been into trying to stay in shape. At 37 I decided I was going to get serious and try to run consistently. Ran my first 5k and got 2nd so I figured I'd keep going and see what I could accomplish. Been struggling with injuries the past few years, mostly shin splints. Now at 42 and injury free, I'm still chasing PR's.
