    Default Rooftop Luggage Carrier

3 rugrats now and we have to use the 3rd row seats to carry everyone. So there goes a third of my cargo room in the wife’s suburban. Looking to get a rooftop carrier of some sort to put suitcases and such in for our trips where the wife thinks she needs everything including the kitchen sink.

Like the idea of the rooftop bags for having more flexibility for suitcases than the hard carriers will.

What would you buy again or not buy?

Or should I just drive my truck separate to carry all the stuff the wife and kids “need” to survive a week at the beach?

Just make sure you get one that fits your car from an aerodynamic perspective...Thule/Yakima/inno are your best bets.

What made you decide a car topper and not a hitch hauler with bag?

We are going through the same thing. Our first trip is next week down to Florida and I picked up hitch hauler and an enclosure bag thinking the pros outweighed cons.

Cost, aerodynamics and if I needed something easy access.

This is the route I went.

We borrowed a car top deal one time, my wife forgot it was up there and drove into the garage.

Get the extension so you can still lift the back hatch with the hitch hauler attached It’s like $25 at harbor freight.

Buy a boat and carry things there.

I already use hitch hauler to carry coolers, beach toys, kids bikes, etc.

Right now I’m looking at only needing it 2 trips a year but that may expand in the future. Don’t mind paying a little more for something that will last.

We do week at beach with my family and one with her family every summer so that’s the main need right now.

I’ll spare the list we carry, but I’m fine with couple changes of clothes, beer cooler and fishing gear, it’s everyone else’s stuff that takes up a lot of room.

Another suggestion is to just look at face book marketplace or craigs list and buy a utility trailer for around $500 and you will have something way more useful than rooftop cargo carrier and it will hold more. We use ours all the time on trips.

Good deal. I’m with you on everything with packing. Imagine I’ll be in you shoes in a couple trips if the wife has her way.
