I probably put 100 miles on my truck last 3 days looking for the perfect last duck hunt of the season.
This spot was found by hiking up a mountain and staring through a spotting scope. Watched about 50 mallards drop into this spot over the course of an hour. The bonus, they were all in pairs. The super bonus, the drake was in the rear pretty much every time. Our light here sucks usually. Heavy drizzle, light fog and my decoys placed in front of a big stand of Doug Fir in the distance. So, my plan was to shoot the rear bird right up til the time the dog brought back 2 brown ones. I would of waited for better light, but this spot is tidal. I had roughly 2 hours from LST to get my ass out or I’d be dragging a sneak boat. Too old for that shit.
The sprig was the last bird. I can’t resist a decoying sprig.
