Default How finicky is a wood duck?

Was walking along the edge of our beaver swamp y'day and jumped up about 25 wood ducks in a spot that I have not seen them before. Was looking for them to take my son tomorrow morning, but they were where I didn't expect them to be. They flew off and landed in a different spot in the swamp, but didn't leave entirely.

If posed with that scenario, would you go to where I jumped them up in hopes that they came back to that spot tomorrow morning? Or do you think it is unlikely for them to be back in that spot given my being a moron and not being more careful about keeping my distance?

Woodduck is going to woodduck. They may entirely be in a completely different spot than either of those tomorrow. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable can answer. But I’ve been in a spot where I saw 50 and the next day I saw nothing.

Good chance that's not exactly where they pitched in anyway given it was mid day.

They're likely flying into another spot and swimming into that one by 11am. They kinda cruise around without flying.

go to the closest "open" spot near where you saw them flush. Good luck on youth day.

Well, you can put your son in the spot where they flew to when you bumped them then go try to bump them again and at the same time...they might fly right to him. (Make sure he's got a lot of shells handy when you leave him there).

Roll of the dice, either way. If left undisturbed they swim around a lot. Chances are they landed a hundred yards or so away from where you saw 'em and swam to the spot you jumped 'em out of.

I don't target wood ducks anymore. With that said, if I didn't know where they were landing, but I knew where they were sitting before noon, I'd hunt where I saw them instead of taking a wild guess where they might go. Even if they don't land where you saw them on the water, there is a good chance they'll fly through low enough to poke at. That's my method when I'm scouting other ducks, it's worked pretty well.

They were finicky. Saw two high flyers. No shots fired. The boy had a blast regardless. Next year.

I’d go back and sit at daylight where I think they’d drop in and on the upper end side. Then I’d sit till they came in. If they dropped in somewhere else I’d just call them across to me. You got one more try next Saturday.

This unless there is food there. I attribute it to them possibly being bumped from somewhere else on the day I see them in a random spot.
