    Default Pouring lead

Reading the buckshot post, I wondered why people aren't just buying bags of buck and making their own out of duck shells. I quickly see that you can't find bags of buckshot in stock anywhere.

Anyone ever made their own shot? Either molded or cold chilled by dropping hot lead into water?

I thought this was going to be a video of a good shoot.

Not spent. Just replacing one shot size for another. I killed my first buck with a #7 .410 shell with the 7 shot replaced with 00Buck from a 12 gauge shell. I have since used the same method with .28 gauge shells for kids and have seen several deer and a lot of hogs shot with it.

Obviously buying the shot now isn't an option, so... I am really interested in the cold chilled "dropped shot" method. It is how all those copper coated lead #5's were created, but i never understood how it worked. Is it a simple matter of dropping the exact weighted droplet of molten lead from a set height into water to get a round pellet? How does one accomplish this in bulk?

Poured through a "mold" of sorts that drips lead through a series of holes directly over a catch basin with water. Different size holes makes different size droplets. Needs just enough water to cool the lead before it hits bottom(otherwise it would dent).

32 to 36 caliber lead muzzleloader ball moulds and a source of lead. 00 is 33 caliber. 000 is 36.

Wheel weights would be tempting, but they will be hard.

That makes sense to me. Thank you.

Rat, I think that you can still get the elements to add to that type lead to soften/harden it. I remember looking into it long ago. Tin and antimony were 2 I recall...
