Default Dove field 101. School me

Might have a field that I can lease. I habe never been involved in planting a field.

Has been a standard AG field for as long as I can remember. Any ballpark on cost per acre to plant/manage if we were to plant a mix of millet, corn, sunflowers? Would theoretically pay a local farmer to do it.

Not to be negative but try to minimize your chances for disappointment. Established fields are hard enough to get birds to these days, so starting a new field won’t be easy. Sunflowers are king but you can’t skimp on anything

Dove fields are expensive and usually a waste of time. Just start kissing someone's ass in august like 3/4 of the male population in this state.

Lets go with ~25. I know there have been a few dove fields very close in past but not up that way enough to know without starting to ask more.

350-400 an acre if you are paying the farmer to do it.

Just kind of feeling it out. Aside from the money it would be difficult to be more disappointed than not hunting at all.

Appreciate your input. Is that just for planting, or is spraying, etc included too?

It's expensive bro. A good one is year round labor. Sunflowers are great if your farmer fences them in and /or shoots deer at night before they eat all of them. Pre treat ,plant, fertilize, have unlimited time to keep food in there for them. Honestly, some places are just not dove places. You can do it by the book and never have a decent field. Early season pro so millet is a safe bet the first few years. Good luck.

That's about right depending on how far your farmer is.. and then other upkeeps. We plant our own, it's dern near an all year affair.. along with the rest of the property

This is a 77 acre piece, only part managed at all is the AG field.

It'll be a lot easier if you've got a tractor around or near by.. continued cutting around the non planted areas, late season standing corn, misc things. You'd want to do something with the standing millet. Or you might want the first few weeks and call it a year..
