Is there a reason it's a Mallard/"Summer" Duck hybrid instead of a Mallard/Wood Duck hybrid?
Never heard this term used before.

You've never heard wood ducks referred to as summer ducks?

The small wood duck is a species of waterfowl that can be found, in suitable habitat, during the nesting season. Unlike Canada geese and mallards, which historically never nested in the region until recent decades, the wood duck is supposed to be present during the warmer months of the year. In many parts of their range, wood ducks are known as the “summer duck” since they are the only wild native nesting duck present during the season.

Not intended to be a jab, but are you from South Carolina?

I always call them wood ducks but I've heard the term summer duck since I was little - I guess it's my Yankee half. I call red drum "spottails", though.

My Dad is 84 and killed a bunch of ducks around the Congaree River growing up. I've never heard him or his friends refer to a wood duck as anything other than a summer duck.

My father and his group as well, I've always used the term.. it's good for profiling now. opposite of when you hear someone say redfish or mahi mahi.

I'm not young and never been part of the cool kids, but i've called them summer ducks, Woodies, and the occasional wood duck. Summer Duck is still most preferred.

Killed some Summer Ducks in No Dak once. The locals thought we had shot the Holy Grail bird. It's all perspective. We plucked , cooked and ate them with greed.

Mallards can be a bit rapey. i guess they've branched out from mallard on mallard violence.

    This.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-
