I don't do it to save money, I do it to make sure done right.

    Also, I enjoy it.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

You'd have to buy everything in bulk to save much money.
I buy already made about 75% of the time. I make my grouper rigs, easy and I sit here watching TV with a crimp tool in January,
I buy my witches from Carolina Lures outta Morehead City.
He supplies for a lot of the sportfish fleet up there

Just got my order from Captain Ed. Good stuff.

Next questions: what knot do y'all use to attach the main line to the spool? And what test? All mono or braid backing?

Braid backing will save a lot of money in the long run. Knot to the spool just has to be any nonslip knot as long as the spool has the little pin. Most people used to use 20-30’ of mono against the spool so it wouldn’t slip, and then begin the braid backing with uni - uni. I like an Albright knot with a lock.

Thank you, brother. I use the uni-uni all the time inshore. What test # mono and braid do you run standard on your trolling setups? And how much braid backing?

Depends on what you putting it on, but I always try to err on the side of larger braid. 65# on 30w and 80+ on 50w and bigger. I also put the top shot based on the spot I run it trolling. 25 for this, 50 for that, 100 for that. That way when it hits the backing, I know where it is in the spread.

80lb mainline, braid backing if you are there to load up.

30lb/50lb if you are there for fun and the fight.
