16 Tundra Cold Start question
As of this week my 16 Tundra started acting sluggish when I started it for the first time. It’s the coldest it’s been in a while, so I’m assuming this is a cold start issue. I can smell a strong gas smell when it finally does start. It runs rough for a minute then smooths out. The check engine light came on this morning ing for the first time, but I haven’t had a chance to check the codes. It’s Sunday and I’m leaving to go OOS in the morning. Any ideas? Thanks!

Battery might be getting weak. Batteries tend to last about 2 years or less these days. Might be worth checking.

Battery just died in my wife’s 18 4runner. It was a Panasonic battery from the factory.

Just replaced the battery 3 weeks ago.

Code would be helpful before all the keyboard mechanics lead you astray.
Cold start as in the engine spins forever before it starts?
Cold start as in engine barely turns over?
More fuel = more boost!!

KRT, yes to both. Once it does start, it’s sluggish and I smell a strong gas smell

My guess is stuck open purge valve. It’s allowing the fuel vapors to enter the intake and it “floods”. Once it starts it burns off all the vapor then runs fine.
Purge valve should stay closed until engine is running and has vacuum.

If the check engine light is evap codes, that’s where I’d start.

Heading to pull codes now. I will let you know. Thanks!

Common issue on BMW’s and some GM’s is a leaking fuel injector. Haven’t had a Tundra yet with one but the cold start characteristic is the same. Typically has rail pressure codes and a certain cyl misfire code, like PO303 cyl 3 misfire.

My ‘13 tundra did exactly what yours is doing now. My mechanic said it was a common issue and all he had to do to fix it was reprogram something. I’ll find out what he did tomorrow and let you know.

P0441, Evaporator Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0455, Evaporative Emission System Leak (Gross Leak/No Flow)
Showed 6 codes, but it was each of these two times.

KRT should open a shop. He’s smart.

Like I said before I knew the codes... my money is on a bad purge valve/solenoid

Ersepton,
Make your trip. The said component will not strand you, you will experience what you have been and that’s it. When you get back, have your local shop check it out. Good luck on your trip.
