    Default Exits

All the crying about blood trails or lack prompted me to want to see some exits from various calibers, if I shoot one wrong here in the near future I will still post a picture of the exit if I’m given the opportunity.
This doe deer ran 40yds after being shot with a 6.5 creedmoor at about 120yds, massive blood trail, she just toted it. 130gr Sierra HPBT, running right at 3000fps at the muzzle.

I listened to UGA's Dr. Larry Marchinton speak on the subject many years ago. In a microsecond, an injured deer will dump adrenaline into the bloodstream and try to escape danger. That adrenaline can indeed (temporarily) increase blood clotting. The reality is, a deer shot in any vital part of the body can ( and will )run dead for a period of a few seconds or longer. 100 yards is not unheard of with lung or even heart shots. It's just part of the deal.

DRT Shots are always preferred if skill, distance and opportunity present. Not everyone can make a 100 or 200 yard neck shot. A lot of folks need to practice shooting and make sure that the rifle/scope/ ammo trifecta are dialed in... on the places I hunt in SC, a DRT shot is important unless you like crawling into swampy, log filled cutovers. Hahaha

    I like exit wounds myself.

I'm a big fan of the neck shot or full-frontal shot.

I shoot SST's out of a 7mm-08 and usually don't get an exit on broadside shots. But they typically don't run out of sight either.

I don't think I've gotten an exit would from Hornady .270 130 SST since I've started shooting them, and at times no blood at all. 50% run off and die within 50-60 yards other 50% DRT.

I like exits myself. I am not interested in whether or not the deer “absorbs” the bullets energy. If the deer leaves after I shoot, I want a short, bloody trail with a dead deer at the end.

This next one was shot with a 300wsm, 180yds yard range, shot right behind the shoulder, lung came out the exit and plugged the hole, very little blood, deer ran 30 yards into the woods and piled up. Seen this happen 3 times now with magnum calibers running really fast, not ideal.

    Field dressed on impact.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-

I was a neck shot fan until last year, 300wsm, deer was 120yds, shot her in the neck, straight to the dirt and couldn't get a follow-up shot as she flailed around due to other deer in the way. She got out of the lane and we couldn't find any blood after point of impact until where she laid up. I got in the rabbit trail she went down and ripped her up never to be seen again, tiny blood drops in the bed, tiny. Should have pinned her shoulders.

.300WM, 200grn ELD-X, at 175yds, calm and feeding, she ran 50yds or so. Same size does 2 days before painted the feeder, the bullet went through her, a 2X4 and the 4X4 leg, she didn’t twitch and fell into a ball.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

100-110. I don’t weigh ‘em, just shoot ‘em.

Great thread wish I had taken pics of the buck I killed a couple of weeks ago exit wound.
300wm 165gr Barnes TTSX 100yds could have stuck my fist in his off-shoulder.
