    Default Last Hunt

My old man made his last hunt this morning. At 14 years old he just doesn’t have the drive and hips to make another hunt. Taking him this morning and seeing how he handled himself left me no question as to if he was still able. He’s done his job and everything I’ve asked of him. He will enjoy a life of leisure and laziness until his last breath.

Looks like he has been a good partner. Old labs have a lot of soul in their eyes.

I am sure there are many good stories locked away inside that dog somewhere.

    Bless his heart!

Good on ya for taking him. When he's done, he's done. Sounds like you got your confirmation that he's ready to retire and carry out his days just being your best friend.

That old feller looks like he enjoys his cigarette and a swig of rock n rye in the blind. You know he did well one last time, but now he gets to trade his place in the blind for the best seat on the couch.

Great job by the 'Ol Man'. He looks like I feel right now. I hope he enjoys a long retirement.

As a cat doctor told me one time, “steak and taters is what he gets till that day”. Well earned retirement, 14 is impressive.

14 years is amazing! Good on you for retiring him before pushing too far and thanks so much for sharing.

I think about this a lot. My oldest lab is going to be 13 the day after Christmas and has slowed down drastically the last couple of years. At one point a couple of months ago, I thought his last hunt had passed on a very slow day with no retrieves toward the end of last season. He has been moving slow with a lot of stiffness in his hips, even refusing to get out of bed as I left the house for a cool weather dove hunt, but now he’s on a better joint supplement and feeling good enough to jump on the couch from a couple feet away last night. I know at this point he really only has one hunt left so I’m hoping to make it a send off he deserves.
