    Default Late Season Success

How many of you have had late season success with mature bucks? I’ve got 2 bucks I’m hunting and both seem uninterested in does. Seem to be feeding at night and going back to bed. Not getting any daylight pictures of either. I’ve tried to close the gap and catch them transitioning from bedding to food but I can’t get any closer. At this point I feel like I just got to get lucky.

Finally starting to get a few in a early in the am and at mid day. Times are an hour fast on these pics. I was about 100 yards away from the big boy leaving out of the stand while he was over there. He seems pretty swollen up but most of the other bucks don't seem interested at all in the does.

the wind is the key with the larger mature bucks, you sitting on the ground like in the other day pic
won't cut it with most wall hangers, not saying it doesn't happen but usually not.

I think I am going to just get lucky with this buck. That stand is about 20' up but in my opinion is too close to where they are coming in at. Stand has been there for years and has produced but this past year the area behind me has been clear cut and it has drastically changed their pattern. It sits along a decent sized creek and has oaks all around it, will have to relocate next year and hope he survives. To me, once it gets cold, the deer tend to move into the thicker stuff to get away from the wind. Got 2 stands in the thick stuff once the temps drop, gonna try those in a few weeks when I am back up there.

I’d move a stand closer to their bedding and put out a fresh corn pile in a new location and hunt it last Saturday on the quarter moon

Keeping moving closer to bedding until you bump him or kill him. They are going to get up and feed coming off the rut.

I’ve killed a few and will add a couple thoughts I haven’t seen mentioned so far here. Hunt early AM and try to catch him running late while headed home. We get a light third rut here in mid December and if you got young does you probably see it too. It’s enough to keep them cruising a little. Great time to do some loud grunts when it feels right. What have you got to lose?

Also, some of the biggest bucks I’ve killed have shown up during evening hunts at last light when a front was moving in and threatening rain. Seems to get them up a little early. Sounds like you’ve got intel, just need to pick the right time and place. Good luck.

Dang it! Just got busted. Not sure what it was but was a deep blow. Wind was perfect and I climbed at 5:30 am. Deer came from behind me this time.
