    Default Low recoil youth shotguns?

My 9 yo (small frame) has expressed a desire to shoot birds, that said, he shot a single shot 410 at 7 that gave him a bit of a kick and has been concerned about recoil hence his hesitation to start shooting. After doing some searching, I'm leaning towards getting him a TriStar Viper G2 youth 20, they have a two stock (youth/adult) combo that is in the affordable range. My thoughts are the autoloader will reduce recoil, and I'll start him with low recoil loads. Would likely just give him one shell at a time for practice sessions, than move to a heavier load once we get in the field and he's comfortable.

Any better options for low recoil guns? I don't want to go 410 route or smaller gauge route so really looking at 20 ga guns.

Anyone have a used one they're interested in selling?

My daughter shoots the tristar. Light and low recoil. No issues so far with it.

Probably not a bad idea. In just a few short years he will be 6ft tall and weigh 200 pounds and will be into a different gun. Time goes by so fast. Enjoy these years and take a lot of videos. Spend a lot of time with him now because once he hits about 13, aliens will invade his brain and remain there until he is about 22-24, then he will return and be your hunting buddy again.
If it ain\'t accurate at long distance, then the fact that it is flat shooting is meaningless.

I am in this boat now. My son is 16 and he still hunts, but not like he used to.

'Light' and 'low recoil' don't typically go together in shotgun terms. Physics proves that a heavier gun will result in less recoil compared to other guns with all other variables equal.

Also, 'low-recoil' rounds and semi-autos don't gel well from what I've seen. I'm sure there are exceptions, but low recoil 7/8oz 20ga shells wouldn't cycle in my 1100.

What's your kid's length of pull?

I’m in the same boat but I need one in left hand. Escort was making one but haven’t in a few years. Talk to me.

I’m torn between setting him up with a lefty or having him shoot a right hand gun left handed.

I put a grocery bag of lead shot in the cavity of a synthetic stock for my kids youth model 20 870. Helped big time w recoil. Check out mercury tubes as well, a huge help w recoil. Might fit in the forearm end. Just my 2 cents, a youth learns to shoot better with a single shot. Once they are proficient give a second shell. Good luck and the tri stars are great little guns.

Identify which eye is his dominant one. He needs to be shooting on that shoulder. If he is left eye dominant, just buck up and buy a lefty gun or at minimum a BPS or over/under.

Damn, why didn’t I think of determining his eye dominance...

He’s 7 and can’t handle a full size gun. Are there any youth model left hand 20 gauges available that I’m not aware of?

I second the Weatherby SA-08 but no idea if they make a left handed one.

Might take you up on that if I don't pull the trigger before then.

His length of pull is 10".

I figured the low recoil round would essentially turn it into a single shot for practicing and getting him used to the gun. We'd then move to standard low brass before we started him hunting. Once he was ready to actually shoot birds I reckon he won't notice any recoil from high brass in the moment.

Have you considered waiting until he's big enough to handle a gun? If a 410 is too rough, he may not be ready. I know I had to wait a while after I first wanted to shoot. I had to be satisfied with my Daisy until I could show my dad that I was ready both mentally and physically.

I didn't get to drive the car when I first wanted to either.

I don’t know you from Adam, but I’ve got a 20 ga. Bps with a 22” barrel and a cut down stock you can try if you’d like. It was my starter gun after I finally grew out of the H&R single shot shoulder buster and it’s currently collecting dust. I live in the charleston area.

My 9 yo is small. I’ve thought about a shotgun for a while but it’s really useless until he can properly shoulder it. We have my great grandfathers old single shot 410 that he’s able to throw under his armpit and shoot occasionally but I’m not rushing it. He totes his BB and Pellet guns happily still. Sucks but he’s just not big enough to shoulder LOP on the compact youth 20’s yet but he’s close.

Limited options. I am in the same boat. M2 20 left hand and but then you have to buy a compact stock.

My oldest is using a Mossberg 500 LH youth 20 gauge. I have 21” & 26” barrels. He’s shooting Kent bismuth 2 3/4 #5 or #6 for ducks. I stumbled upon a bunch on these last year at a good price.

Mine is right handed but left eye dominant.
