And or being killed by a guy wearing an under armor camo tee and face paint smelling like dryer sheets
It's a good read. Thanks for the reminders, KRT, kind sir.
i'm just trying to figure out how hard it is to suck at deer hunting.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.
Deer hunting is a lot more difficult than, say, turkey hunting.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-
There is no such thing as an automatic shot. If you believe there is, you're approaching the level of arrogance required to prove my point. I've hunted with guys who've killed some incredible animals both up close and far away and none of those gents would dare tell you they haven't botched "easy" shots or made "rookie" mistakes when the chips were down.
Solid advice on all 5 points IMO
Dead Downwind makes dryer sheets that smell like winning.

When you take a shot under the following terms you don't deserve to be able to hunt.
1. It is a once in a lifetime buck. I will take shot (even though I know it isn't in vitals) and hope for the best.
2. If I don't take this shot I will never get another chance. (Maybe it will cripple it enough that I can get LUCKY and find it
3. Buck is standing at 300ish yards ( my gun is sighted in at 100 yards) but I can just aim little high and MAYBE I can hit it.
4. Angle of deer doesn't matter I am shooting a rifle and it will do enough damage
5 trying for a neck or head shot but can't put a 2 shot group in a 5" circle
6 trying for neck or head shot and your heart beat has the gun jumping all over the place. ( Or aren't capable of making that shot with a steady rest)
7 shooting through brush ( well it is a rifle it will go through that limb and still do enough Damage.
More bucks are lost because of the above scenarios than you can imagine.
We as hunters owe it to the animal to take ethical shots and practice making those shots.
One of the things I drilled into my son when he started sitting by himself was when you shoot a deer I want you to be able to answer following questions when I get here.
Was deer tail tucked or standing up?
Did deer buckle, kick, draw up?
Where was last place you saw deer?
Where was last place you heard deer running/crashing?
Yes these scenarios are beyond redicilous but it happens more often than you think. Get around bunch of hunting buddies yacking and you learn more than you want to know
