The wife is deploying in December so my normal trip hunting the last 30 days of waterfowl season was not going to happen this year. I adapted and decided I was going to hit the opener and try to whack a deer while season was open.
Little brother picked me up from the airport and we headed to grab some last minute supplies and off to the hills we went. Forecast was rain and wind so I wasn’t super optimistic but whatever, it was better than 85 degree S Georgia heat in October. We made it up to our spot to make camp, drink some whiskey and got ready for the hunt. Long story short, we spent a day and half walking a lot of steep STEEP ass hills and found two bucks feeding up a draw. After putting a sneak on them and getting to within 120 yards (thanks 50 mph winds) we whacked both of them at the same time. These deer were shot literally at the bottom of a ski slope without the nice lil chair thingy to take you back to the top. 1 deer isn’t bad, 2 at the same time really sucks. 6 miles, 2500 vertical feet and 9 hrs later we were done.
Deer done now on to the duck opener and crappie. Camped at a local lake and found some birds so we headed out to crappie fish. As dusk approached we put out the glow lights and started immediately pulling 10-13in crappie in the boat. We stopped around 90 fish and decided to get some sleep. We woke up and headed to a small creek, threw out 8 decoys and waited. 10 min before legal light ducks were everywhere and they continued to build in numbers. Buzzer sounded and it was game on. 14 ducks in 17 minutes.
This scenario continued for the next 6 days. Limits were not as fast but good nonetheless.
Overall a great trip and pleasant detour from the norms.
