    Default New Mehico Elk

Drought this year has all the bulls smaller than normal and brittle. We glassed 21 bulls and all the larger ones were busted off or broken up. Found this one bedded so we set up a shooting position and waited for him to stand up. The sun was right in my face, so we took a tripod and hung a jacket to block the sun on the scope, then I took my scarf and draped it over my head.

Approx 20 minutes later he stood up broad side 645yards. Hit him just a little further back than I would’ve liked, but he was hit hard. (Maybe some wind I couldn’t see because of the sun) He walked down the hill a little bit and just stood there. You could tell he was hurt bad, but why not send a few more.

He was in some brush, but I could still see fairly well for the Hail Mary shots. 3 more shots at 580yards and he went down. All 4 rounds connected. I have a totally new respect for how tough these critters are. Soaked up 4 rounds from a 338 Norma Magnum with 300gr Berger Elite Hunters.

He may not be the biggest, but he’s my first and I’m happy with him. Another hunter killed Saturday as well with what looked like his twin. I still have my travel partner hunting, so I’m just chilling. Tagging out the first day doesn’t suck, especially after climbing those mountains!

I stand corrected, it’s not a scarf it’s a Shemagh. It just happened to be in my bag from all the sniper competitions. I’m dang glad it was still in there.

Good friend gave me this bottle and said I couldn’t break the seal until I killed. Well, it was opened!

    Awesome. Congrats.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. -Tecumseh-
