    Default Gator Zone 1 Advice

Hey guys looking for some advice. I went gator hunting where the Dawho River meets the South Edisto Friday and saw 20+ 4-6ft gators. Saturday I went up the Combahee river, Folly creek, and cuckolds creek. Didnt see much so we pulled out and went to Bennetts point. No luck their either. I am thinking about heading more towed Hilton Head next weekend. Can anybody point me in the right direction for better gator hunting areas in zone 1? I would greatly appreciate it!

You wont find little ones where the big ones are. Infanticide is like a thing with them.

I’d go for the small ones. Buddy hunted on a depredation permit and brought home meat off some 3-4’ range. It was mighty fine compared to the larger ones I tried. I wouldn’t kill one over 6’.

I have read about all kinds of gators in Hilton Head resorts and golf courses. I was thinking there might be some in the canals near Bluffton?

This past weekend it was pretty cold compared to recent temperatures and very windy. With all the recent rain low was very minimal. When I scouted preseason low tide was a 6-8ft drop in water elevation but this past weekend it was only 2-3ft. I am thinking the weather from the hurricane earlier in the week made hunting not ideal. Friday and Saturday we were out there from 1pm until 2am. I was there for plenty of low tides.

Be there at daylight while it's still nice and calm. And yeah...low tide.

I think you got screwed by the weather. I once hunted during a cold snap and it absolutely sucked. Try it again when it warms up a bit.

I saw a few woodies but nothing else. I also saw many many signs for no trespassing. I don’t understand how public water can become private water? All around those old rice fields there were signs. I could have easily gone up into those areas at high tide.

every bend of the rice field canal I was hunting had folks set up teal hunting.
I saw birds right at daybreak
I spoke with several at the ramp that had a few birds, but they said it was slow.

I plan on going tomorrow during the afternoon low tide. Any advice on what to do during the day? At night we were spot lighting them. I guess y’all ride around slower looking for them swimming in the water?

Pretty much. Going during the day is the best way to go by far, in my opinion. Take your binos and find a nice gator.
