    Default Dead/dying trees

I noticed the canopy in my swamp seemed a little sparse this summer. I just walked around yesterday an noticed 3-4 dead laurel oaks and some other dead hardwoods as well. These trees are in standing water most of the year. I noticed sawdust at the base of some the trees and boring type holes. Not sure if there's anything I can do about this, but was mostly wondering if it's ok the cut the wood for firewood? I dont want to help spread whatever is causing this, but also don't want to see the trees go to waste.20200914_134438.jpg

Asian long horned beetle....possibly. Invasive that just popped up in Hollywood. Cottageville is not far. They prefer hardwoods.

Had Clemson and Department of Agriculture walking my property in Hollywood today. No bettles were found but the property next to mine had some. Email invasives@clemson.edu*or call 864-646-2140.

Just be sure to wear a black shirt when they show up. Needs to have words on it like "unity" and "matter is the minimum". Go tigers.

The asian longhorned beetles are almost exclusively on red maples. You're fine to cut and burn on your property. Just don't load any firewood that's not kiln dried and tote it all over the state or country. Ohio trash brought ALB to SC from their infestation.

No oak is going to tolerate standing water "most of the year."
You have drainage problems below you and the excessive water is the culprit.

Sat in the stand for the first time Friday and "sawdust" covered the tree, the ground around it, the stand. I wonder from where it came? covered my hands and clothes climbing up and covered the stand

The great pee dee flood plain has been underwater most of the year. A three week span this summer that she was even inside her banks, not counting the last week. I was finally able to retrieve a ground blind that has been under water since November of 2019.

There are three massive oaks already I can think of right off hand that's dead already. If the lakes on the Yadkin River valley cant keep some water, it's going to be pretty ugly.

an oak cant stand water like that. its likely the trees is dying and THEN the critter/bug bored the hole.

    either way, dead is dead.
