ONe thing for sure, the deer won't hurt it. I don't even think they will walk through it. not sure why it's called "Buck"wheat/

I planted mine the beginning of May. It has seeded out and dried down enough where the birds are starting to use it.

In my experience with it, the deer will eat it when its young but it can handle the grazing pressure and still makes it to the flowering/seed stage.

I just looked at my planting notes and I planted mine on June 30th. My experience as it pertains to deer is the same as Rebs, which makes it great for a dove field. The deer usually just nibble on it early on and then back off allowing it to bloom and seed out.

I planted it for deer and they loved it. Numerous bucks feeding in it daily. Never tried it for doves.

I shot a dang nice buck eating buckwheat a few years back. In my dove field, no less.

The neighbor down at the farm has bees and usually plants a stand of buckwheat somewhere on his place. 2 years ago he planted a huge patch and that honey was dark as molasses, I personally did not care for it

I think buckwheat would be good to plant around beans just to keep deer from entering field.

My first crop of buckwheat done great. It got knee high and nice thick stalks. That is until the deer discovered they could eat it. Now I can’t get it to grow over 3” before they mow it. Next year I guess I will put up a fence.

Any idea the value it has for hay for cattle?

It's great for cover. The stand of buckwheat we had, I was worried it was going to overtake the 15' rifle stand I have for women and children. We had to bushhog it.

Sure. Just don't lead them as much.

PS. this is a joke referencing Apocalypse Now. Nobody got the joke, though.

I remember hunting that buckwheat with you back in the day. And yes you had a shit ton of birds. Pretty sure most people limited except for your buddy that stayed in the field until dark while nutz took electric shock collar Treatments

Only time I ever hunted over it that I can remember

hahaha...I do let the women and children hunt out of the rifle stand...and buckwheat sucks. My deer will eat it, but only if there aren't any pine trees or dirt left.
