    Default Buckwheat dove field

For years, I have planted everything you can think of except for sesame. Sunflowers the deer ate, millet doesn't seem to hold the allure it used to. Even corn was a no go.

So this year I decide to change things up a bit. I planted buckwheat and milo. Years ago I planted buckwheat one time and the doves came like mosquitos so I decided to try it again.

I like planting buckwheat for several reasons. It it is a great soil conditioner, the deer can't hurt it, it's very simple, doesn't get real weedy and inexpensive to plant. $50 for a bag which will plant one acre and I didn't even fertilize it this year. If grass gets to be a problem Poast will take care of it. All you have to is get the field ready, disc it in and forget about it mostly. I planted my field a little too late as it is still in the bloom stage but starting to produce a few seed.

Here ya go, I don't know why the larger pictures are still showing up as I deleted them. Oh well,,,,

Looks good, keep us updated on doves.

I want to find something to put in some smaller areas where deer are thick.

Very few, the buckwheat just started putting seed on. I planted a little later than I should have.

I planted buckwheat the year after you planted it last time and it was awesome. I swear the price quadrupled the next year.

Like you said, it’s easy as it gets, deer don’t hurt it and it dumps a shit ton of seed.

How do you manipulate it for hunting? Might be a good option for me next year.

I think I planted it about mid June and you don’t have to manipulate it at all that’s the beauty of it. I’m telling you guys this is the easiest shit to plant for a dove field you would be amazed!

Do you bush hog it when it dries down or just leave it standing?

Leave it standing but you could probably bushhog when it matures.

Great for other tasty birds too, and pollinators.

May have to give buckwheat a try next year. Let us know how it does this season.

Will do, I'm curious as well! Some people who have bees plant it for them as well, they say it makes a great dark honey!
