    Default Thermacell

I have no idea why I don’t have one so I was reviewing them this morning. Question...there are some reviews that are not so positive for deer hunting...saying they put off an order. However it’s undetermined if the smell bothers the deer but it’s certainly not a natural smell so they have to know something is up right? I know a lot of y’all won’t get in a stand without one. Have you noticed if it bothers deer? Do any of you use the earth scent? Does that make a difference?

I haven't noticed any negative reaction other than if they are downwind of me in general. I generally don't use any kind of cover scent to try and hide it.

Play the wind just like you would without one. If the can smell the thermacell they can smell you. I use one this time of year and its makes sitting a little more tolerable.

I’ve never had an experience that would lead me to say it has affected the hunt other than keeping the bugs off me. I’m also surprised at how long mine has lasted and the beatings it has taken.

Cigarette smoke masks the thermacell odor.

I use them all the time- never noticed the smell bothering the deer. I sit a number of pop up ground blinds with shots from 20 to 200 yards- and I have had deer put their head in the window a few times- without spooking. I wear a camo head net and also use red fox pee or racoon pee cover scent that I spray on the brush outside the blind as I'm going in.

The blinds and thermacell have done wonders for taking kids and for busted up old men that don't want to climb and need comfort.

I, and others, have occasionally gotten queasy and a headache from the thermacell- turn it off for a while and it all goes away.

You ain't hunting the lowcountry without either thermacell or heavy bug spray- almost never get blown at with the thermacell

Only time I’ve ever been blown in daylight, I was bow hunting and using a thermacell.

I know some that use the earth scent- and others that have added cover scent to the pad- they couldn't tell ant difference over the regular

Can’t say for certain if it was the thermacell or my stinking ass from sweating to death but im not going in the woods this time of year without one.

If they can smell the thermacell they can smell you. Your stanky ass is probably more off-putting to a wtbd’s nose than skeeter killin pads. I won’t go in the woods without one until the bugs die back a great deal.

I’ve never had a negative experience with it while deer hunting

I cannot imagine sitting in a stand this time of year without one. Whatever negatives, if any, are far outweighed by the positives.

I don't care if they can smell it. I'm still using it

I have had deer walk right up to and around me while using one. Even if they did react to it they would see me swatting mosquitoes without one well before they could smell me.

BTW- they work best if placed upwind of you- it puts you in the protected cone

I won’t hunt without one. My only complaint is the quality of the device now, they stop working after a season or less. I found one I won on SC Ducks 17 years ago and that one fired right up though.

Damn. My originals are still going strong too.

You couldn't fit all the deer I have seen killed while people were running them in a tractor trailer.

This is the fundamental truth. Motion will get you busted long before scent and from any direction.

I can't imagine hunting without one while it's still warm. Never had any issue at all.
