Default Fishing Out Of Charleston Question

I have inshore fished Charleston but have never been past the jetties.
I am tired of pulling a boat or driving to eastern NC to go offshore.
I am going to start going out of Charleston due to proximity of living near Columbia.
I have the boat and all the chart plotters, blah blah blah
In eastern NC, where I have fished my entire life.....this time of year I run out to about 75ft to 80ft of water (18 to 20 miles)
to start dolphin fishing.......what is the closest I could probably find them out of Charleston this time of year?

Also, I grouper fish in Sept and Oct when they seem to come in closer, at home its within 18 to 25 miles
What would that look like down here

    Thanks

As far as dolphin go we're a little late in the season.
I would say get out to 120' minimum (preferably deeper).
Go find you a weedline near georgetown hole to get started.
Keep your VHF on & you'll figure it out from there.

SC is not the offshore fishery that the Outer Banks are. Not even in the same ballpark
Them that don't know him won't like him, and them that do sometimes won't know how to take him

This should be on a billboard in Mt. Pleasant, think it would thin the crowds out?

you need to go a LOT farther than 18 miles to find a weedline. I have caught a dolphin that close, but he was lost. The first sailfish I ever hooked was between the Hector and City of Richmond off Georgetown......I think he was lost too.

But its been a loooooong time since i went out there. Last time I went out there regularly, there were tuna.

The old guy that taught me to fish also fished NC. He always told me that SC fishermen are just too stupid to know that its too far to go.

with today's boat/fuel prices and what comes back in the box.....he is probably right.

I miss going offshore but the cost and time to catch a bunch of schoolies just doesn't add up anymore.

12 miles off the Charleston jetties gets you to 60 feet of water, 27 miles gets you to 100 feet of water(Y73 Reef) .

Someone please text, call, or facepage/tweet Bogster and let him know about this thread. No other is salty enough to comment on this thread.

I'll add that bidding on the Salty trip (Emily's auction) is a great way to experience GT and SC offshore. I'll split it with you, if I can bring my boy and serve as mate. Would be fun to meet. Mark, if this happens, I don't mind bringing bait, tackle, equipment, ice, etc.

I caught a grouper in the harbor once. It was only sandwich size though.

Got dolphin in 90ft this time a year king fishing. End of the rocks was 30nm according to gps. I’ve got a sail at the seabouy during a king tourney this time a year as well. Hell we got some flip flop dolphin & could see land before but those were thrown back.

I spun a hub 10 years ago and had to limp in at 7 mph. Left out the lines and caught a 15#dolphin in 54’. 8 miles from North Edisto. The same day, I had a sail in the spread at 65’. They come in closer than you think, but I wouldn’t burn 100 gallons betting on that.
