    Default Fly fishing setup (redfish)

Trip down here to Cancun fly fishing for bonefish and tarpon has me wanting to try some stuff on the fly at home. I wasn’t able to do much with the fly rod down here because the stuff I’ve used was for small trout in the mountains of nc and panfish in ponds, so it was completely different. Any recommendations as far as combo? Where do you get your flies? What kind of line? What rod and reels you guys using? Before this goes south I’m looking for tips. I don’t want your spots. I don’t want your favorite fly. I’m looking for gear suggestions.

Somewhere or another I saw where someone said this thread is worthless without pics... So I’m going to post some pics from our trip in Cancun. A fish bites 2 times a day, right before I get to the water, and as soon as my boat gets back on the trailer.

I have the exact same rod as Clutch.

Has worked just fine from river rockfish to 15lb dolphin.

In the grass, shrimp patterns, spoon flies, crab patterns.

    In the creeks, clousers.

9ft 8wt St. Croix on a Lamson Liquid. Pretty sweet setup. I also have a Reddington setup. Caught a bunch of rockfish on that. EP crabs and spoon fly's as boggy said.

Also for pre-made flys check out Lowcountry Flies or 239 Flies on Instagram they are a good source. Not sure where you are located but Pawleys Island Outdoors has some flies and I just went in Barron’s yesterday and they have a good selection as well.

Seven or eight weight rod, WF floating line,.... A lot of good set ups today for the money.
I haven't bought a fly rod in many years but just picked up a Lamson Liquid.... It's a lot of reel for $120.
I've had several of their reels for close to 20 years now and Lamson Waterworks is a great American customer support company.
For flies check with a local fly shop regarding selections.... A flashy crab or shrimp pattern with a solid weed guard.

Check out TFO rods. I have a couple as backup rods and if I was blindfolded, I would have a hard time telling it from my very expensive rods. I rarely use anything but an 8 wt. around here or bonefishing.

Stay away from a cast aluminum reel. They are too hard (maybe impossible) to keep from corroding around salt water. Get one machined from solid billet. Look for one with sealed bearings and drag.

I use a 10 wt. fly rod and reel for sheepshead fishing, not really fly fishing but more like tight line fishing with a bream pole. I bought a cheapo Reddington plastic/composite reel for it and it has been maintenance free. The drag isn't as smooth as a high end reel but for how I use it, it's great. I wish I could find a composite reel with a super smooth drag and sealed bearings. You don't really need a high end reel for spottails.

Randy Hamilton's spoonfly is one of my favorites for fishing in the grass. Umpqua's rattle mullet is fun on tailers but they have a hard time catching it. It's still fun watching them try.

I’ve got a Galvan 8wt on a TFO Lefty Kreh Professional 2. Love the reel, don’t love the rod. TFO makes great stuff but that particular rod is their entry level, I believe, and has the feel of a boat paddle. I’d like to upgrade rods but don’t use it enough to justify much of an upgrade. For budget stuff, I prefer Redington. As mentioned above, machined reels with sealed bearings are the tits.
