    Default Will this work? Homemade Pressure Washer

    A buddy of mine took a trash pump with a 3" pvc intake and necked down the outflow side to 3/4" to try to create super high pressure. Will this create a lot of pressure or little to none?

    I was worried if the outflow wasn't large enough it'd burn up the impeller on the pump from overheating. I told him to at least split the 3/4" hose and run 2 wands off the one hose. Will a regular garden hose work or will he need a legit high pressure hose?

    What do y'all think? None of us have a clue and this thing is going to get a test run 20 miles down the MS river at our camp to blow sediment out of our boat slips. I'm pretty good at coonass engineering but I am not sure about this one.

    Use as large of a hose as you can, for as much of the run as you can, then neck it down. I've used a 2 inch transfer pump to sink a bunch of poles for docks.

    You don't want high pressure- reduce the outflow down to 1 1/2 or 1 1/4- it will give plenty of pressure and still have high volume- we use this all the time in dock building

    I use a 2" transfer pump to wash down tractor implements. I have the garden hose fitting coming out of a tee with a ball valve on the run end so I can throttle the pressure to the hose by shutting the ball valve. It's not like a pressure washer but it's got a lot more pressure than my garden hose at the house.

    I've got an adjustable spray nozzle that fits on the 2" hose. It's got pressure like a fire hose. It was the ticket for washing lime off of a barge but it's like wrestling an anaconda.

    I agree with Bad Habit, you need volume to move silt.

    Q = Av. Q = liquid flow rate (m3/s or L/s) A = area of the pipe or channel (m2) v = velocity of the liquid (m/s)

    You don’t increase pressure but reducing diameter....It is actually the opposite. Velocity and pressure are not one in the same...it’s basic hydraulics
