    Default Goats

Anybody here have goats? We just got our third (7 week old myotonic/fainting) plus two 6 year old fainters. Plan is to get two Nigerian dwarfs (milking goats) next

I'm moving into my new house next weekend. I built in a 9 acre field. I planning on cutting about 2 acres of it and will be fencing in the rest and letting some goats do their thing on the rest. I think that picture proves you made the right decision!

I would stay away from Nigerians (we have 20+ Nigerians and some sheep) if youre just looking for dairy goats. Most of ours are ADGA, but yield aint worth the trouble and theyre probably the least hardy goat you can get. Unless you like to medicate, fight worms, and bury goats, I would consider another breed, preferably a Kiko cross.

What sort of flea and tick prevention costs does a drove of goats incur?

Fleas and ticks are not a problem. Mites are. Barberpol(intestinal parasite) is a huge problem in this state and is the most costly to keep at bay. It will never go away. Pasture rotation helps. If I had any idea what my wife spends on goat meds, I would have a coronary. I stopped asking a long time ago.

My daughter has been hounding me to get a couple of goats. Can they share space with chickens?

Our chickens fly on the goats from time to time. The goat wander inside the coup. But they get along

I finally gave in to my wife’s begging and got her 4 Nubians. I’m ok with all of them, except Otis. I don’t like the way he looks at me and he’s tried the head butting thing a few times, usually getting slapped mid-air. Last time was the last time though. I walked down to the pond and stood by a fallen sweet gum while my meniscus was jacked up. Otis tried me out but I snapped off a green sweet gum limb and caught him across the nose real quick. We’ve been good ever since.

I surveyed a lot for a 60 year old lady whose 60 year old over the road trucker husband brought home a young man from one of his trips and told he’d discovered he was gay. She had fainting goats. Those damn things are dumb as hell,

One of my customers had a mini goat- don't know what kind- little guy followed us everywhere- I walked 200' down the dock framing on top of a 2x stringer, started to turn around and he came running after me like a mountain goat. Pretty cool little animal.

We had a few regular goats when I was a kid. The white kind whatever those are. The billy was a mean so and so. Head butted the others and the turkeys around when we’d pour scratch feed out. Took a little while to train but I could give a wind up with my arm as if to throw a rock and he’d run for the back corner of the pasture to hide. Somebody is gonnna be the boss unless you intervene.

My Pappa had an old billy named Zam. Zam thought he was a dog. Rode around all over the place in the back of his truck.

Zam even had a leather collar. After Zam passed from natural causes, my pappa hung the collar up on a nail in the car port. 20 years after Zam had passed, you could put your nose to that collar and still smell Zam.

My friends had a billy goat like that BB. My favorite was going through the drive thru at the Hardees in Walterboro and watching the cashier's eyes when would pull up to the window with that sucker in the back of a station wagon.

Kiko or Kiko cross. Kiko crossed with those Savanna goats are pretty damn hardy. A boer goat is always looking for a reason to die.
Cydectin is what we used for a wormer. Hell, we gave it orally.

They were cool to have around. Damn coyotes would work me over though.

I plan to fence in about 2 acres this spring and add a few. Give me a little break from bush hogging and the kids want some

Wonder what my HOA would think of a few goats?
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I've always wanted a few. My dad warned me to never get one. He said they like to climb on your car.

There was a farm near Ravenel, near the ACE basin, on which a lady raised goats and mini horses. The goats would stand on the back of the horses. That will make you do a double take.
