Default 5 gallon buckets in the salt marsh

I saw what looks like upside down 5 gallon buckets on top of a stand made out of 3 pieces of pvc pipe scattered throughout the salt marsh on the way into jekyll island. Any ideas what they are for? Lady at the welcome center was clueless and one of the turtle nest monitors kind of guessed it had something to do with marsh sparrows but didn't sound to confident in her answer. Don't have any pictures because my phone sucks

Talked to one of the researchers this morning. They are nesting sites for salt marsh sparrows. There are cameras inside to see if they are being used by sparrows and I assume to see how many hatch and survive

The last time someone tried to use plastic as a medium for bird nesting, Ducks Unlimited cooked about a million wood duck eggs, but fuck a salt marsh sparrow anyway, right?

If you put a rain proof vent on that deal, it would work fine

They’re not a fan of spartina, but they sure love bulrush.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
