Chipotle feeling heat

The manager of the Chitpole Mexican Grill on David McLeod Boulevard in Florence has been placed on suspension pending an investigation into an incident this afternoon involving NFL player and Dillon County native Darius Leonard, according to Chitpole Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol.

Leonard is a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts. He was a standout for the Lake View High School football team.

Leonard posted a video on social media that is going viral.

He said he and his family were at the Chitpole Mexican Grill when the manager approached them.

"Me, three other Black guys and a mixed woman. We sitting there casually eating. I mean we are way from everybody. And toward the end of our meal. You know, the manager come up. Not knowing why the manager walking up. You know, he come up with a terrible attitude. Asking us, do we have a problem or something. I mean, we're all lost. Trying to figure out what's going on. He's saying that White guy said that we was verbally abusing him talking trash to him. And you know, it was basically a lie. And we got kicked out of Chitpole because of that. And they said they was going to call the police. And they wanted to call the police on us. And you know, that's what being Black in America is right now. Us, not even doing anything wrong. Going out to eat with your family. Just trying to spend a little bit of quality time. And you can't even enjoy eating anymore. And we talking about Black Lives Matter and for the guy to look at us and lie. And laugh in our face as we talk out," said Leonard during the FaceBook posting.

He said that he was very upset about the matter.

"We felt like it was very disrespectful and that's the White privilege that we're talking about. There's no Black guy that can sit there and eat peacefully, without being racially profiled. And we know that if that manager would have called the cops right then and there. We know what would have went down. And it's wrong in America. And yall wonder why all the protests. And all that stuff is going on right. We are tired of this. We are tired of it. And y'all White people, y'all don't understand what we go through. This is very frustrating," said Leonard.

I had lunch at a little bar in Belmont today beside the job we are on. Sat at the bar beside a black dude with a mask, I never even thought about him being black ( I did judge him for the mask though) and ended up having a great conversation with him for about an hour and a half. I’ would reckon he had as peaceful of a lunch as I did.

I know Darius personally. He’s a helluva of an athlete and genuinely good person. He ain’t the type to make something like that up to stir the shit. That being said, just going by the verbal account I can’t say for sure if was a racial thing or not. Probably was, but I can’t call it without being there and only hearing one side of the story.

Didn’t say he was well spoken. I’d put money on there being some shit talked to the manager when they were asked to leave and thus why they were threatened with the cops being called. Especially if his account is truthful. Not saying it is or isn’t, I won’t there. I’m inclined to believe his account based on my time, knowledge, and encounters with Darius. Black or white everyone from Dillon County has some asshole in them. Doesn’t make him a bad feller.
