Because there numbers are way down. I’ve seen like 80% less scaup recently than i did 15 years ago.

Then why allow 2 at the beginning and 1 later? why not just make it one the whole season?

Oh, I don’t know about that one. I miss the numbers of scaup that I grew up hunting. We used to could count on them being in the bag. Used to always see them in the bays. Now is seldom see any. I miss them skimming the water 150 yards out and banking into the decoys with their little grunting sound. Gone with the wind I guess.....just like beaver swamp mallards.

Is that South Carolina’s regs, or another state? If SC, you got a link? Looking it up, I only find last year’s.

I'll agree scaup are not nearly as plentiful as they used to be where I hunt. We were on Murray striper fishing last year in February and my son said "that ring neck has a blue bill". He didn't know they actually came to sc. I killed 2 scaup in 1 shot by accident the year hevi shot was available not far from there.

The last year I remember blue bills being around pretty good was 2011-12 season. Also had a great teal season that year, we shot birds from opening day until closing.

I feel like I've grown into just wanting to kill edible ducks, so I just haven't thought about it much.

I promise that a bluebill is a very edible duck...you just need to learn to cook...

Yep - 2012-13 was really good too. Unfortunately, with the first sign of a good breeding season, the Feds upped the limit to four and we killed the entire hatch before they could breed the first time so we were right back at two scaup limit the very next year...now 1½...
