My thoughts: I almost think the first and third birds are the same. It looks like mostly a black hen but the underwings aren't showing any dark feathering so I don't think it's the best example of a black. The middle bird has a lot of mottled duck in it but the double white bars say that it might have some mallard. He could be a Mexican duck with a bad paint job on the bill but I still think mostly mottled duck.

Of course, those duck are what those ducks are and what I think about them doesn't change that one iota.

    The inspiration for this thread.

The black/mottled debate is well versed at documented here and he’s been around for all of em.

He just wanted to show off that mount.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

Nah- just wanted to see your comments.

Rubber head is correct, first and third pictures are the same duck. A big Mottled Drake. I thought at first it was a black, but once in hand the breast and overall appearance was that of a mottled duck.
Middle picture is a prime specimen of a Mexican Mallard Drake, and regardless of any question of coloring, it’s spot on. Shane (insert air jerk off here) did the mount because he was staying at the neighboring lodge as my group and took it back with him.
A true black is next and will hopefully be displayed with all of them.

I've only killed one Mexican Mallard, threw me off my first time.. I ate him on tortilla bread, on the plate with some little young cactus shoots, and loads of coronitas.

Seems like these days hunting beside Shane is about the only way to get a duck to him. RIP squatty420. May your family find closure.
